New members at Red Rose are beginning to make welcome and regular appearances at local races over a variety of terrain.
At the McCain UK Cross Challenge at Sefton Park Liverpool Red Rose (sponsored by Sal Cape Flapjack Company) joined in with the elite runners from all over the UK. The class of field in both the Women’s and Men’s race was immediately obvious as the front runners left quality local runners in their wake. Nevertheless excellent runs in the mild but increasingly windy conditions came from both teams. Claire Bunce showed her increasing strength by placing 100th in 36.44 closely followed by Alison John Haslam. Nikki Roberts put in a spirited performance to be the third team member home. The whole team of 10 ladies were :Claire Bunce, 36.44, (100th), Alison John Haslam (104th), Nikki Roberts (126th), Glenda Dobie (128th), Paula Plowman (133th), Ann Walworth (137th),Joan Goldthorpe (144th) Julie Palmer (151th), Karen Clark (158th)Debbie Wood (159th). Well done everyone!
In the Men’s race John Shepherd came through after a steady first lap to lead the team home in 39.12 with Ken Addison running well to break 40 minutes in 39.41. Team Captain Phil Butler ran well to finish in 41.41. Barry Wheeler managed to stay ahead of Cliff Utting finishing just nine seconds clear in 43.45. Stuart Cann (44.39) Phil Dean(45.15) and Allan Howard (56.31) completed the Men’s team. (See facebook for photos)
At the Wesham 10K held at Lea, eleven Red Rose took part in this popular race. New member Jose Pinon Shaw showed some promise in his first race for the club finishing in 42.29 with Simon Houghton getting closer to breaking 43 minutes in 43.15. First Red Rose lady home was Natalie McGuffie with a 47.17 finish, clearly in front of her team mate Julie Coupe who just broke 50 minutes in 49.51.
Roger Johnson showed further improvement with 52.46 coming in ahead of Yvonne Johnson, (53.29)
Another new member, Louise Gavell ran 56.19 whilst Bernard and Evelyn Elkington showed their sheer consistency at this distance with times of 57.21 and 58.14 in the Vet 75 category. Two more runners new to racing, Adele Nuttall and Tom McNicholas both comfortably beat the hour with times of 58.26 and 58.45.
Anthony Noon ran the Best 5K Fun Run at Moor Park finishing in 29.13 well ahead of his target time and is now looking to increase his training.
Paula Plowman and Emma Cowie Shaw took on the David Staff Memorial 5 mile fell race up to Darwen Tower in ‘gale force winds’ .Paula ran 54.51 and Emma 61.28.
