Big Turnout at Blackpool Inter Club

44 Red Rose turned out for the first Inter Club event, held at Stanley Park, Blackpool. John Shepherd led the team home in 22.30 followed by Ken Addison in 24.02 who held off a last ditch challenge from Joe Swarbrick  in 24.03. Healthy competition ensued throughout, with Dave Maudsley running well in 25.16 , five seconds ahead of Phil Butler , who in turn, held off Steve Whitney (25.23) and Fred Lynch (25.23). Stuart Cann ran 25.51 only days after his surprise appearance at the Blackpool marathon and Doug Brydon held his position well to finish in 26.04 with Barry Wheeler metres behind in 26.07.

A close race between Red Rose ladies Janine Needham and Debbie Kirkman saw Janine just taking top spot in 27.39 and Debbie on 27.44. The ladies team came fourth on the night with five to count. Paula Plowman 29.28, Anne Walworth 30.24, and Yvonne Johnson 32.29 completed the team.

Red Rose men managed fourth place in the Vet class and an excellent second in the Vet 50 category with Addison, Swarbrick, Lynch and John Allen making up the team.

The first Inter Club fell race was the Wardle Skyline race over a 7 mile course and a 1000feet of climb. At one point the runners had to contend with the last remaining snowdrift! First home for Red Rose was Philip Butler in a time of 58.04 followed by Stuart Cann in 61.40.  Four team members arrived home within a minute of each other. Ben Donoghue 64.06, Tony Thorley 64.29, Barry Wheeler 64.36 and Philip Davidson 64.36. Peter Bolton finished in 66.39. Paula Plowman and Sally Cape ran together to finish in 78.43 and Jim Robinson ran 1hr 45 min.
