The Fleetwood 10 mile was the second Red Rose Championship race of the year. Blustery conditions hampered chances of PB’s but Ken Addison was 5th overall and first V55 by a large margin in 65.29. A good performance from Phil Darwen saw him secure 2nd club place in 67.56 and Stuart Cann delivered on his promise with a time of 69.09. Steve Blaydon almost broke the 70min barrier with 70.04 ahead of Phil Butler (70.48). Doug Bryden battled through with a time of 71.18 with Geoff Haworth getting more road races under his belt finishing in 73.44. Phil Davidson’s 74.37 was enough to keep him ahead of Barry Wheeler who finished in 75.09 a week after the London marathon.
Janine Needham put in a good performance on her return to racing with a time of 77.22 to take 3rd F35 place. Gill Jefferson was 2nd V50 with a time of 80.52. Third Red Rose lady was Paula Plowman with a time of 84.33, again only a week after the London. John Plowman put in a stirling effort over this longer distance finishing in 94.39. David Wilkinson, 97.35 was only a few strides ahead of Allan Howard who finished in 97.51. Anthony Murphy’s 10 minute a mile pace saw him finish in 1.40.12 whilst Keith O’Brien and Judith Cook completed the course in 2.13.26 and 2.14.03.
At the picturesque village of Wray the Scarecrow 10k provides a tough test with long drawn out hills in the first half of the race. In a small field of 91 runners Joe Swarbrick finished in 12th place in 40.03 to take the V55 prize. Tony Thorley was in next with a great run of 47.12. Carol Douglass was awarded the V60 and V65 prizes with a time of 53.02 and George Fletcher ran 57.36 in one of his favourite races of the year.
Paul Woan travelled to Stratford for the Shakespeare Marathon and was satisfied with a time of 3hr 38min feeling comfortable right up to the later stages of the race.
At the Welcome Tavern 5k Steve Whitney and David Maudsley both broke 20 minutes with times of 19.21 and 19.51 with Phil Butler almost within touching distance to finish in 20.02. Debbie Kirkman put in the Red Rose performance of the night, finishing as second lady and a with PB of 21.21. Phil Dean ran a steady 22.10 and Sally Cape ran an evenly paced 27.06.
