At the Bikes and Barrows Festival, Scorton, Red Rose runners competed in the Sherriff 10k held in memory of Phil Sherriff. After a prolonged applause at the start line 158 runners tackled the scenic and undulating course. Ben Donoghue immediately joined the leading group of runners and maintained contact throughout the race, finishing less than 40 seconds behind the winner in a personal best time of 38.47. In 7th place was Joe Swarbrick in 39.27 taking the V55 prize. In 10th, Ken Addison completed the men’s team of three in 40.15 for Red Rose to win the men’s team prize.
Even more success was achieved by the brilliant performances from the Red Rose women. Debbie Kirkman took the F40 prize in 44.53, Jill Jefferson the F50 prize in 46.04, Anne Wallworth F55 in 49.05 and Carol Douglass F60 in 51.59, added to this Debbie Kirkman, Jill Jefferson and Janine Nadine took the ladies team prize.
In total 31 Red Rose runners took part. Jose Pinon Shaw ran strongly on the testing course for 40.45. Dave Maudsley was narrowly ahead of Phil Darwen after a race long dual, finishing in times of 41.42 and 41.53. Phil Butler put his downhill fell running to good use to steal away from Stuart Cann with a time of 42.12 to Stuart’s 42.45. Doug Bryden produced another consistent performance with a time of 43.24. Mark Billington ran 44.04. Tony Thorley produced another good 10k with a time of 47.28. John Wiseman ran 48.25. Paula Plowman (48.54) Barry Wheeler (48.59) and Anne Wallworth (49.05) challenged each other throughout the race with 11 seconds separating them at the finish. Julie Thorley finished in a satisfying 49.05 followed by a PB performance from Luke Bosman in 51.45. George Fletcher pealed away from Roger Johnson to finish in 56.01, Roger came in just ahead of Yvonne Johnson with times of 56.20 and 57.49. Club team spirit produced further pleasing performances with pairs of runners covering the course together to bring out the best in each runner. David Wilkinson joined Allan Howard to record times of 58.39. Just over the one hour time, Janice Johnstone ran 61.16. Wendy Ward and John Plowman completed the entire race, stride for stride finishing in 63.48 with Keith O’Brien just easing away from Judith Cook with times of 78.55 and 79.20.
At the Lytham inter club Red Rose had another good turnout of 35 runners. A great performance by Ben Donoghue saw him break the 30 minute barrier with 29.59 ! Joe Swarbrick and Ken Addison honed their competitive edge with another close battle. They headed the Red Rose Vet 50 joined by John Allen and Phil Davidson to equal Wesham’s score in a battle for second team place.
The Avenham Park 5K attracted 243 runners , 26 of which were Red Rose. Excellent weather and great organisation contributed to a holiday atmosphere for this new race. Ben Donoghue ran an impressive 18.43 to be 16th in a good quality field. Steve Bladon ran well to finish in 19.45 and John Allen was second Vet 50 in 19.56. Debbie Kirkman was the first F40 in a time of 21.49 and Joan Goldthorpe was first F60 25.15.
Ken Addison held on, to out run Fred Lynch at the Wray Fell Race, to take first and second in the V55 category. Other times : P.Butler 56.21, G. Haworth 59.11, B.Wheeler 61.18, J. Hyde 65.08, P.Plowman 67.07, S.Cape 74.28, G.Fletcher 80.04.
