Weekly Round Up 30.04.18

Weekly Round Up 30.04.18

Starting the weekend early, John Naylor took on the 6 hour endurance race at Liverpool Hope University, “Race for Hope” on Friday 28th April. In, at times, heavy rain, the runners took on 501 metre laps around the library and attached accommodation blocks. Within the allotted 6 hours, John managed 125 laps to cover 62.625KM – a new distance PB, which got him the 4th place finish.

On Saturday, various members ran the Derwentwater Dawdle. Here’s what Wendy had to say:

Saturday 28th April saw 6 red rosers set off early to take part in the Derwentwater Dawdle! Billed as a 23 mile (although we all recorded 24+ miles) race taking in 4300ft of ascent. The following six eager Red Rosers all lined up at a very casual start line for the course briefing: Richard Ward, Wendy Ward, Louise Walsh, Aimee Midgley, Nina Colquoun and Mary Conway. We set off at 8.30am and headed for Cat Bells – our first summit, it would be 9.4 miles to our first check point at Rostwaite Institute. From there we headed up towards Dock Tarn, taking in some killer rock steps up – now renamed the stairs of cirith ungol! From there we headed north past Watendlath Tarn to the next check point at Surprise View. From there we headed to Ashness Bridge and started our final ascent to Walla Crag before heading back to the start At Braithwaite via Keswick. The views were incredible and made up for the hard work of climbing. At the finish we were all rewarded with a medal, a hot meal of jacket potato with beans and Cumberland sausage and a pudding. It was agreed by all to be an amazing day out on a tough course – so who fancies it next year?

The times achieved were: Richard Ward – 6:38:15; Mary Conway – 6:58:45; Aimee Midgley and Wendy Ward – 7:52:00; Nina Colquoun and Louise Walsh – 8:42:00.

At the Brun Valley 10k Trail Race in Burnley, a healthy turnout of members attacked the course. The result were: Pauline Moorcroft 55:02; Michelle Griffiths 55:21; Austin Trelfa 59:32; Louise Withnell 1:05:08; Gareth Fairey 1:05:34; Jess Campbell 1:10:06; Kety Cleece 1:10:13; Lesley Renshaw 1:10:21 and Janette Covell 1:23:36.

Elsewhere at the Wray Scarecrow 10k, Carolyn Douglass led the club home with 53:44, followed by Joan Goldthorpe with 55:43; Alison Mercer 56:14; Kathryn Abbott 1:01:49; Sharon Birkbeck 1:05:26; Andy Birkbeck 1:05:28; Alison Dick 1:08:24 and Fiona Gutteridge 1:08:24.

At the Roses 5K in Lancaster, Stuart Smith got round in 19:22, for the first Red Rose member back. Ben Smithers finished in 21:52 followed closely by Samantha Edwards, with 22:03 – a new PB!. Other finishers were: Richard Chippendale 24:10; Karen Smith 28:28 and Toshif Vally 31:59.

Some of those runners also took on the Bay Gateway 10k that day. Ben Smithers finished in 46:11, again followed closely by Samantha Edwards with 46:51, achieving 3rd Lady finisher. Toshif Vally finished in 1:13:02.

The fast Mid Cheshire 5K course saw Nicola Hughes get a new PB of 20:02.

On Sunday, at the Newport Marathon, Ben Smithers finished in 03:41:07, Gina Biggs in 6:07:31 and Faisal Ali in 06:19:18 on a fast, flat, friendly course.

At the Chester Half Marathon, Ste Pickering got round in 1:55:05, which is his fastest time, compared to last year’s time of 2:37:54.

At the Hamburg Marathon, Colin Manning finished in 5:26:54 – 1 hour 10 minutes faster than his London marathon time the previous week.

Elsewhere, John Barker and Lee Lawrenson competed in the Ibiza Half marathon. The route was really scenic and race conditions were not as warm as the London marathon, which made it more tolerable for the runners. John finished in 1:36 and Lee got round in 1:56.

On Sunday 29th April, members of Red Rose and other local running clubs ran mile laps – the Green Drive Mile – for charity. Runners were asked to contribute £1 per mile lap. The event was organised by Neil Tate of Lytham St Annes Road Runners Club, who himself ran 26 miles. In total £1500 was raised on the day.

The event was held in support of 18 month old Jacob Willett, son of Red Rose’s Mark and Ness, who has recently been diagnosed with and is undergoing treatment for cancer (rhabdomyosarcoma). They have chosen the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (Ward 84) and Ronald McDonald House Manchester as their charities.

Among others, Jacob’s dad, Mark Willett ran 16 miles, Andrea Davison ran 13 miles and Samantha Edwards 6 miles.

In total the fundraising team have raised almost £9000 for the chosen charities so far. If you missed the event, it is not too late to contribute. You can read more and donate at the below link:

      Hi Ruth,

It’s John Naylor. That’s sorted now. When I do the results, I pull a list from the parkrun website of all the people registered as being a member of Red Rose to compile the parkrun list. So I’m not sure why this didn’t work.

      Thanks.

      John
